Countdown ...

Hi again,

Here you can see how many days left before OpenBSD decides to bump the versioning here ... Noted also that even though it is disabled wisely for now because of the tree lock, lldb had been imported. On OpenBSD it can debug a simple core dump, but can't attach to a process. But that is already a lot (and there is gdb from the ports too) ! so awaiting the tree unlock in the following weeks ... So great work from the small OpenBSD source team (as usual, but they never disappoint).

Noted as well BSDMag has been inactive for couple of months (at least in appearance), no new issue since the last time, hope all is fine over there in Poland ...

In a personal level not too much since, only I did a very little contribution to lugaru (was the opportunity to see I miss C++ some days :-)) also not visible yet but takes a bit into NetBSD world (I mean more than usual) as I do not necessarily like to limit my world and like to discover strengths from other perspectives.

From LLVM point of view, after Esan for FreeBSD is completely merged (frontend bit), I ll have a bit of Darwin work (possibly), we ll see.

BSDMag ... as promised

Short update in this beginning of June, finally my article went out in time.
No surprise it is all about LLVM sanitizers in BSD :-) As always, this is the current and future state before the next 7.0 release, highlighting tedious kamil's work for NetBSD, various individuals for FreeBSD and so on ...

Flourishing May

Right into the spring now, since the last post there is also rapid changes here and there :
- Finally Barony, following up the 3.1.4 release (and its availability on GOG.com), had been imported into the OpenBSD ports tree, thanks to @bcallah, @thfr, and later on @solene for their tight collaboration so users of the future 6.4 release of OpenBSD will be able to play (if you re impatient, snapshots are always available). Import which led me to submit a PR for further improvements. The FreeBSD port is still under review.
- In the LLVM area, I nearly reached my goals whether it is into the sanitizer or the static analysis part ; even a little bit of LLDB if I can.
- Apart of these, did usual small contributions here and there, following up if X or Y still compile under our preferred BSD ...
- Back also to writing, still an article for BSDMag to finish hopefully before this summer.

Plumbing again

Next OpenBSD release will be 6.1, the first without CD release. Here the actual changelog if you are curious. A lot of work for ARM architectures have been done so far and recently quite an update of vmm as well among those changes. Impressive as always :-) My only contribution to the system is bringing back a handy function to dump memory statistics into gdb, since there is several memory pools, it was quite lost :-)

In my side I have been pushing around mainly fixes to some video games, programming languages so far ... or porting  ... mainly for OpenBSD, sometimes FreeBSD benefits it. To name some ... AssaultCube, php (the programming language I contribute the most apparently ...), LMMS (the expected release has delays but due to the complexity of the software ... plugins ... that s understable), OpenTomb, Daemon Engine, ... Apart of this I enjoy my article reviewer role for BSDMag and SDJournal pretty much :-)

I have some pending updates, I ll bring those up in near future hopefully ;-)

I ve written for BSDMag since November 2014 and really enjoyed it, talking about so many different topics. Thanks to BSDMag team for this opportunity. I, however, will step back slightly from it (I may write time to time we ll see) to focus better on several open source projects I am more involved in, related to OpenBSD mainly. Apparently, regarding BSDMag twitter account, I am more recognised for my article about Unikernels (which I enjoyed quite a lot at this time I admit, that was quite a story ... I remember I originally wanted to use haproxy but at this time as not compilable under NetBSD hence I committed one of my first patch for this amazing proxy server :-)). Well, I start to believe this is a kind of my death legacy :-P

Joking apart, now I m focused specifically on Ardour porting to OpenBSD :-)

Spring rising .... 2016

Hi folks,

long time no see ! First of all, the new BSDMag issue is out since a couple of days, all about kernels and syscalls, from the unikernel concept to how to install OpenBSD from source (which might involve some kernel features settings). My article is about FreeBSD's syscall. I hope this issue will bring into you a greed of curiosity.

Apart of this, I got a little more involved in OpenBSD's matters, directly or indirectly (i.e. porting more software related to multimedia, games, music making) in order to make this operating system more appealing and proving that yes it can be more than just an operating system for routers. It also said that 2016 is the year for OpenBSD and I believe it too.

At last, in the more professional point of view, since the last autumn I maintain a simple C implementation of the DeviceAtlas cloud service usage ... It is a modest piece of code but that does the job :)

BSDMag ... long time no see !

There is a new BSDMag issue, a story about a switch from Linux to FreeBSD, another article about the history of GUIs, two articles about Apple Swift programming languages, the first which is an introduction (mine) and the other for more advanced developers (Object lifecycle) and a couple of open source's ones. I hope you will enjoy the reading !

Writing an article about Swift led me to get interested to a similar programming language, Rust ! Anyway, in my opinion, knowing a language which has in base closures support, memory management safety, multi paradigm ... is a must have nowadays.

Apart of this, I stick on OpenBSD community (can be just updating packages or making some open source video games working as recently did a small patch for VDrift ...), and contribute time to time as usual to some open source projects.

2016's news

Hi folks and Happy new Year,

First of all,  this is the Best of 2015 ... No worries, it is not a musical compilation ... We would not waste your promising 2016 begin :-) but more likely the BSDMag's best issues from various authors, topics (for system administrators, developers ...). I hope you ll really like it !

Second thing, during the last months I moved more towards OpenBSD and even got the maintainership of the nmap port. Still FreeBSD is one my daily drivers of course ;-)

50th post already ...

The new BSDMag issue finally landed.

There is a nice introduction to NetBSD, another article about Xen on FreeBSD, TrueNAS, an original article about the GUI evolution through the software engineering history then my article about various development tools on FreeBSD for various programming languages / frameworks.

So that's already one year of writing and it is a worthy experience apart of the personal exposure ; indeed that greatly improved my english in general and the technical one in particular so that serves me professionally speaking as well !

New BSD Mag issue

Introduction about rumpkernel

There it is the new BSDMag issue alongside with a complete article about using sudo, my article about using rumpkernel in a Xen context. I had this topic in mind since quite lot of months and that was still totally unknown to me until recently. I did not spend the time I expected to in first place but if it produces enough attraction, I may talk about it again in the future ;-)

Ah, also short note, nginx and DeviceAtlas APIs work well in this environment (some folks before me tested already nginx alone like here) so if you prefer using all of this in this secure environment, there is no issue ;-)

A while ago, I explained that I was teaching for the first time. This is nearly the end, gave the last (big) bit recently. For sure, I won t forget this experience anytime soon, learnt a lot from it. That reminded me this fact also, you have never finished to learn, it is an endless process ...
 As usual, I prepare the next BSDmag issue + open source projects works.
